**THE DESIGN:**
"Memento mori" translates loosely to "remember that you must die."
The old story goes that during a Roman victory procession, while the crowd shouted praise and the conqueror rode in glory, a servant stood behind him and occasionally whispered some version of a sobering warning: "Remember you are only a man."
Tertullian records this image in Apology 33, and that same warning belongs to the family of thought later captured by the phrase "memento mori."
The "Memento Mori" design carries that same idea through a distinctly Christian lens. The armored skull, eclipse imagery, barbed frame, and restrained palette capture a reminder that victory does not make us immortal, success does not make us untouchable, and comfort does not make us wise.
By itself, that's worth remembering.... But for the Christian, remembrance of death goes even deeper.
You are mortal. True. And in Christ, you are dead to sin. SUPER true.
The old self does not get the throne or the final word. The grave is not simply a future reality, it is also a clear and present reminder that sin, pride, vanity, and false glory have no rightful claim over the one who has been buried and raised with Christ.
For Christians, "memento mori" is not about despair. It's about defiance.
Mortality strips away the trivial, and resurrection strips away slavery. Together, they call us to live awake. Sober, repentant, courageous, and free.
**MEMENTO MORI.**
Remember your death to sin.
And from there, proceed to live in Christ.
